Blancpain Endurance Series Qualifiers – Round 1

Results Comments Off

Monza, Italy - Round One of the Blancpain Endurance Series Qualifiers saw the #99 Torrent Mercedes take part in all 3 races around the Autodromo Monza. In the first race of the weekend, Marius Golembeck managed to qualify the car in a solid P12 position. With a strong start, the car was inside the Top 10 but after various bumps and hits from various other cars, 23 of the 25 incident points were used within the first 25minutes. With finishing the 3 hour race becoming a difficult task, let alone in a strong position, Marius handed the car over to Kimmo Suimonen in position 19 for the last two hours. In typical Finnish fashion, Kimmo was unphased by the incident limit and not only kept the car on the tarmac for the entire two hours, but managed to get the car to an impressive P15 by the finish.

Race Two saw the team adopt a controversial strategy in an attempt to leapfrog the teams around us and hope for a Top 5 result. Marius again qualified the car in a strong P11, but the strategy of taking an extra pitstop failed to come to fruition, and the team had to settle for a solid 13th placed finish. The final race of the weekend saw a new driver line-up take to the grid, with Northern Irishmen Ross Balfour qualifying the #99 car in 15th position for the Sunday evening race. With a similar tale to Race One occurring, Ross received 3 4x contacts in the first 8laps, leaving the car damaged and a high incident count. Ross managed to settle the car down and make his way up through the field despite the slight damage and finish his first two stints in P10. The car was handed to newcomer Patrick Kubinji, making his debut in Torrent colours. Rejoining the race in 13th, Patrick’s pace was strong considering his lack of seat time in the car, and managed to guide the car into a well fought 10th position come the chequered flag. Overall, the weekend was fairly positive- with Monza expecting to be our weakest round this season – we hope the #99 Mercedes can compete for podium positions for the remainder of the qualifying series and secure its place in next years Blancpain GT Pro series.
